The Summerall Guards have proudly and will continue to represent The Citadel as an elite close-order drill team since 1932.
The Summerall Guards perform on every major weekend the Citadel hosts. In October, we will be performing for visiting
friends and families, as well as our classmates, in celebration of receiving our band of gold. Shortly after Parents Weekend, we will be performing in honor
of alumni and their families for Homecoming. Lastly, we will perform on Corps Day to hand down our rifles to the next class
of Summerall Guards.
Between these events, we feel our off campus performances are
also important to the task of The Summerall Guards, since the
purpose of the Guards is to exemplify, through a unique series
of movements based on the old German close order drill and performed
to a silent count, the exactness and thoroughness with which
The Citadel cadet is trained. In the past Summerall Guards have
represented The Citadel nation wide at such events as the football
bowl games; Disney World; the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington,
D.C.; Presidential Inaugural Parades; Mardi Gras in New Orleans,
LA; and St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, GA.
However, each year we receive more invitations to perform than
we can attend. Although the college does provide some funding,
the Citadel expects The Summerall Guards to rely primarily on
fund raising to pay for transportation, food, and accommodations
for each trip. It costs about $1,500 dollars to pay for a single
day trip which does not include sleeping accommodations. That
is why we would greatly appreciate any monetary support you
could offer us in representing The Citadel for this year.
The Summerall Guards have a new web site that will help keep
you updated on current events, upcoming performances, and a
roster of current guards. You can also visit the site at www.sumerallguards.net
to sign up for "The Springfield", a bimonthly newsletter.
Sincerely,
Clayton Trussell
